Underlay and Moisture Barrier Installation
Underlay and moisture control perform different jobs beneath a floor. An underlay may provide the support or acoustic performance required by a floating system, while an appropriate moisture barrier forms part of managing moisture from the base. The right combination depends on the floor covering and the conditions underneath it.
Before choosing these layers, I check the flooring specifications, the type of subfloor and the available information about moisture. Where relevant, we also discuss apartment acoustic requirements and the finished floor height. The installation is planned as a compatible system, including the preparation and joint details required for the selected products.
A thicker or softer underlay is not automatically better. Some floors already have an attached backing, and adding an extra layer without approval can be unsuitable for their joints. A moisture barrier is also not a substitute for repairing an active leak, correcting ongoing dampness or assessing whether the base is ready to cover.
If you have already bought flooring, send the product details and any underlay supplied with it. We can check what is needed for your situation before buying extra materials, and discuss whether a site assessment is required.
