Timber Floor Staining and Colour Changes
Staining changes the tone of suitable timber while allowing its grain and natural variation to remain visible. It may suit a renovation where the existing floor is worth keeping but its colour no longer fits the room. The starting timber, its condition and the finish already on it all influence the available options.
I begin by checking whether the surface can be prepared appropriately, including whether sanding is possible. We then discuss the colour direction and, where suitable, a sample on representative timber. Looking at a sample in your own room is more useful than relying only on a phone image, because lighting and the wood itself affect the appearance.
Species, old repairs and differences between boards can make stain take unevenly or look different across a floor. A photograph or colour name is a reference, not a promise of an exact match. Stain and the protective finish also need to form a compatible system; laminate, hybrid and vinyl decorative surfaces are not candidates for timber staining.
Share the look you are hoping for and a few photos of the current floor. We can discuss realistic colour options, preparation and finishing before deciding whether a colour change is the right approach.
