Flooring advice
Can my stairs match the new flooring?
Often we can create a coordinated look, but I check the stair system separately from the flat floor. A board suitable for a living room is not automatically a complete stair solution. The tread surface, riser and front edge all need an appropriate product and a planned fixing detail.
I start with the existing stairs: their shape, condition, landing and connection to the floors above and below. Removing carpet can reveal details that were hidden, so photos are useful but may not show everything. Any loose or damaged base needs to be assessed before it is covered with a new finish.
The front edge, or nosing, is particularly important. It needs to be compatible with the selected material and fitted as intended, not improvised from a decorative strip. We also need to consider the effect of the new build-up on the steps. Structural changes or a question about stair geometry require the appropriate specialist input.
Matching can mean the same range, a purpose-made matching component or a complementary finish. Timber colour and grain naturally vary, so I prefer to compare samples together rather than promise that every tread will be identical. The risers can be discussed separately if you want a contrasting colour.
Send a full view of the staircase, a close-up of one tread edge and pictures of the top and bottom landings. Include the flooring product if you have chosen it. I can then explain the possible finish, what needs checking on site and which stair components should be included in the scope.
