Flooring advice
Which flooring would I choose for a home with pets?
I would look for a floor that suits the pet and the household, rather than promise a scratch-proof surface. A small indoor cat and a large active dog create different demands. Tell me about the busiest rooms, feeding areas and any accidents, as well as how much regular cleaning you are comfortable doing.
Some vinyl and laminate products are worth comparing for everyday cleaning and wear, while real timber may still be your preference for its appearance and feel. Check the particular product's scratch, stain and water-care guidance. A durable finish can help protect a timber surface, but it does not make the wood underneath immune to dents.
I also suggest looking at colour and sheen in your own home. A very uniform dark or glossy surface can make small marks more noticeable; a textured or varied appearance may be more forgiving visually. That is a choice about appearance, not evidence that the material cannot be scratched.
Simple habits matter whichever floor you choose. Keep grit out with suitable entrance mats, maintain pets' claws and wipe up spills or accidents promptly using the approved cleaner. Check the backing of feeding mats and rugs: a mat should protect the floor without trapping moisture or reacting with its finish.
If you already have pet-related marks, send a wide photo and a close-up in natural light. I will first distinguish surface scuffing from deeper damage before discussing cleaning, a compatible local repair, refinishing or board replacement. Keeping spare boards and the original product details can make a later repair much easier to plan.
